The History of London Gatwick Airport

London Gatwick Airport began its history of flight in the 1920s, and it was first developed for commercial use in the 1930s. Its first terminal, known as ‘The Beehive’ was finished in 1935, and scheduled flights began in 1936. During the Second World War, all civilian flights were stopped in the UK, and Gatwick became a base for RAF fighter planes. After the war, civilian flights re-opened, and London Gatwick Airport became a centre for air travel between the United Kingdom and the United States. In 2015 the airport handled 40 million passengers in a single year for the first time, with the 40 millionth travelling to San Juan on the 14th of November.
