The History of London Stansted
London Stansted Airport was opened as a base for bomber planes in 1943 during the Second World War. After the war it did not become a commercial passenger airport until the 1960s, where it became a major centre for scheduled passenger flights. As London’s other two airports, Heathrow and Gatwick had become overly busy, Stansted became London’s third airport, allowing the capital to take up to 25 million extra passengers.
