Manchester Airport was opened in 1938 as Ringway Airport, and handled its first scheduled flight in the same year – a KLM flight to Amsterdam. During the second world war, the airport became an important base for training parachutists. After the airport returned to civilian use, it swiftly grew, and for many years was the busiest airport in the UK after Heathrow. In 2001 the second runway was finished, greatly expanding the airport’s potential for flights.
